Fun Facts about Suwannee River
The Suwannee River (also spelled Suwanee River) is a major river of northern Florida
Spanish exploration of the area was in the 1530's, and at that time the river was inhabited by the Timucuan Indians who named it Suwani River, meaning "Echo River". In the 1800's, Seminole Indians also lived by the river. Before the Civil War a steamboat called the Madison operated on the river. White Springs(also called White Sulfer Springs) became very popular in the late 1800"s as a health resort due to the belief in the healing qualities of the sulphur springs water.
Historic Suwannee River, as in the song. "Old Folks at Home" in which he calls it the Swanee River and boasts that "the folks up North will see me no more when I get to that Swanee shore" was designated as state song of Florida in 1935. Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park at White Springs features Foster Museum and Carillon Tower.
